Support for the re-investigation of the sexual abuse case at the Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) – which is suspected to be fabricated – continues to snowball.
Ever since social media was set ablaze by the investigation results of the Twitter handle @kurawa in early March 2016, close to 50,000 netizens have signed the petition to support the revelation of criminalization of the JIS Case.
Meanwhile, public reaction towards efforts to raise funds for the PT ISS cleaners and the two JIS teachers is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Through the www.kitabisa.com website, within a mere week, they managed to raise more than Rp 112 million. The fundraiser was initiated by Kawan8, a movement started by netizens who were motivated by the sufferings of convicts of the JIS case.
“Thousands of people have donated money, from Rp 20,000 to hundreds of thousands of rupiah. We are flummoxed by the remarkable response from the public. This shows that our movement continues to garner massive support from the public,” Kawan8 Coordinator, Arita, said in an official statement, Thursday (12/5).
According to Arita, the contributors come from a variety of backgrounds, from the general public, JIS students’ and parents, JIS alumni, and even celebrities.
Kawan8, Arita continued, was formed based on a common vision and mission, ““There are at least 3 objectives of Kawan8, which are to expose the criminalization of the JIS case, rehabilitation for the convicts and to raise public awareness of the case.”
“We are optimistic that we will change people’s view of the case.” The public has been misled by false opinions and information. The cleaners and JIS teachers are victims of a vicious, fabricated case,” Arita said.
As part of their responsibility to the public, they report the tallies and how the funds are used in a transparent manner. They are targeting to raise Rp 1 billion over 6 months. (RO/OL-3)
